Nintendo and Fujifilm Launch New Online Photo Service in Japan
Jul 25, 2008
print version

In partnership with Fujifilm, Nintendo has launched a new online photo service to the Japanese market. This service enables Wii users to print the photos that they upload to their console with ease. This is the first such service for a gaming console, and will enable Wii users to upload snaps to the Wii Photo Channel and print photos via their console.

The so-called "Digital Camera Print Channel" (English name still tentative) has made its launch in Japan. Japanese Wii owners will be able to use the channel to order digital photo prints (currently only available in 89 x 127mm sizes). The channel can also be used to order original “Wii Photobooks” (English name still tentative), which are available in several versions (including Wii character-themed books).

"Wii Name Cards" (English name still tentative) are also available to Japanese consumers. These are like business cards, and can be printed with a photo or a Mii using a choice of six templates (including Super Mario series characters).

Customers can send their photos and order information via this channel to Fujifilm for production and delivery. Fujifilm will also operate the payment system. Please note that Wii points are not acceptable for payment—only credit cards.

This service is expected to become available on a global basis, but at this time there is no debut date set for markets outside of Japan.

Fujifilm plans to exhibit this channel at Photokina, which will be held in Germany this September.
