“EARTHDAY.ORG’s mission is to diversify, educate and activate the environmental movement worldwide.”
I love this sentence. So simple, yet it has so much impact. And while those active verbs are great, the two words that define things for me most are “mission” and “movement.” Make no mistake: Earth Day might be just one day in the fourth month of the year (April 22), but its message requires proactive reinforcement about the environment throughout all 365 days of the year.
In the print industry specifically, in large part because of the COVID-19 pandemic and the ensuing supply chain disaster, sustainability has stepped up to the mic like the front man in your favorite band, similar to what cybersecurity or e-commerce have done. The amount of marketing and messaging and promotion around sustainability has not only seen an uptick in the United States, but even in other regions where eco-responsibility had already made significant gains, too. Missions and movements call for mindfulness of the masses. If we struggle to put the actions we learn into practice, then staying educated is the least we can do.
To help on that score, we present five of our favorite sustainability stories from the last nine months. More “green” content is coming this week (including a podcast), but this is not a one-week deal. Not at all. We are here to run the full 26.2 miles. With you.
Happy Earth Day!
